Kigurumi (įãããŋ), or Kig/Kigu for short is a mask oriented form of cosplay. A special kind of bishoujo anime mask paired with a type of zentai-like skinsuit called a hadatai (ãããŋã¤), it's a hobby for everyone and their unique portrayals of characters.

What is Kigurumi?
Kigurumi (įãããŋ) is a unique form of cosplay that originated in Japan. It combines a high-quality mask with a special bodysuit similar to a zentai called a hadatai (ãããŋã¤).
How is it different from regular cosplay?
Unlike traditional cosplay which often focuses on wigs and makeup, kigurumi uses stylized masks to achieve what many kigu consider a more anime-accurate appearance. The mask and bodysuit combination, often with various padding and shapewear allows performers to completely transform into characters, regardless of their physical characteristics underneath the costume.
What is a hadatai?
A hadatai is a type of bodysuit similar to a zentai (å ¨čēĢãŋã¤) that is used in kigurumi. It's made from a stretchy material that allows for a close fit to the body, often with padding and shapewear to create a more anime-accurate appearance. Compared to a zentai it focuses more on a cool pink skintone, less reflective materials, and a more doll-like focus to the seams particularly around the joints. The goal is not to minimize or make invisible the seams or zipper, but to make them more subtle and blend in with the skin.
How do I start Kigurumi?
Getting started typically involves connecting with the community first. Many kigurumi enthusiasts start by following performers on social media, joining Discord communities, and attending conventions. The main components you'll need are a character mask and a hadatai bodysuit, of which there are many makers, styles, and ways to do-it-yourself. Do be mindful DIY is a culmination of many skills and talents, many opt to commission makers for masks as it can be a very complex and time consuming process for your first mask.
Where to find Kigurumi events?
Kigurumi performers often attend anime conventions, specialized photoshoots, and community meetups. Following active kigurumi performers in your region on social media is the best way to learn about upcoming events and gatherings. Do be aware many photoshoots, events, and meetups are not publicized and are often just a few friends getting together to take photos and hang out.
Why are kigurumi so much?
The initial investment can be significant as quality masks and bodysuits are typically custom-made and built to last. If you are not afraid to contact Chinese makers, there are many options for top quality masks and bodysuits at prices that are hard for others to beat.
Is Kigurumi NSFW?
Kigurumi is a hobby for everyone, and that does include for some kigurumi an expression through content more risque than what you'll find on Kigurumi.Photos. There are sometimes kigurumi that get a bit too excited sharing that type of content, please use common sense and be respectful of others.
What is a kigurumi onsie?
Kigurumi is not a term specific to pajamas, the term is a rather blanket term for a variety of costumes. When I say Kigurumi, Kig/Kigu, I am referring to the mask and bodysuit combination. Unfortunately the term Kigurumi to refer to Pjamas has been adopted by many dropshipping companies and is now used to refer to any costume that is not a mascot costume. This is not the case for Kigurumi masks.
What is Animegao Kigurumi?
Animegao is an old translation artifact owing back to early web translations of the term Kigurumi. Specifically that anime-style masks were confused to be a unique term for Kigurumi masks themselves. This is not the case, however in the west it has become it's own sub-genre of Kigurumi, embracing stylizations unique to western mask makers.
Do Kigurumi Talk?
Sometimes, but not always. The same way you do, but with a mask on. Most wont talk due to the mask muffling on top of a possibly loud environment, as well as to stay in character. Many kigurumi fans romanticize never talking with the mask on but use common sense basically, dealing in absolutes rarely helps.

Kigurumi Mask Vision?
Visability through a kigurumi mask varies greatly depending on maker. Usually theres some level of visilbity through the blacks of the eyes, as well as thin eyeports disguised in the brow line.
